Japan Haneda Airport Accident 'Escape Success'..."Thanks to Carbon Fiber" Analysis
Use of Material with Strong Impact and Good Heat Resistance
"Likely Delayed Fire Progress to Buy Evacuation Time"
On the 2nd, a JAL aircraft collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft while landing at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan, and was completely destroyed by fire. There were a total of 379 people on board the plane, but all escaped successfully within 90 seconds. One analysis suggested that the carbon fiber body of the aircraft may have helped buy time, contributing to the successful evacuation.

View original imageOn the 3rd, local Japanese media reported that the aircraft model was the Airbus A350-900, manufactured in Europe. It was produced in October 2021 and delivered to JAL. This model's fuselage is made up of 53% carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite material. Because of this, the weight is significantly reduced, and fuel consumption can be improved by up to 25% compared to conventional aircraft.
Carbon fiber is five times stronger than steel but ten times lighter. It is also known for its excellent elasticity and bending performance. Considering these factors, it is possible to infer that the impact was less severe and the aircraft damage was reduced when the JAL plane collided with the Japan Coast Guard aircraft.
Additionally, this material is known to have high heat resistance and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, making it resistant to fire. The JAL aircraft caught fire in the left engine immediately after the collision, and the fire spread throughout the fuselage. It is analyzed that the material may have slowed the fire's progress even slightly, buying time for evacuation.
Meanwhile, all 379 passengers on the JAL aircraft escaped without fatalities, but more than 17 people were reported injured. However, among the six people on board the Japan Coast Guard aircraft involved in the collision, local foreign media reported that "one person escaped successfully, and five died."

The passengers on board also calmly followed the crew's instructions, which appears to have enabled the full evacuation without fatalities.
