'Chicken Seller Making 100 Million Won Each'... Franchise Sales Surpass 100 Trillion Won for the First Time
Convenience Stores, Korean Restaurants, and Chicken Specialty Stores Account for Half of Sales
Sales per Employee Reach 106.3 Million Won
Last year, the sales revenue recorded by franchise stores exceeded 100 trillion won for the first time ever. Of the total sales, 27% were generated by convenience stores, and the top three industries?convenience stores, Korean cuisine, and chicken specialty stores?accounted for nearly half of the total sales.
According to the "2022 Franchise (Franchise Stores) Survey Results" announced by Statistics Korea on the 26th, last year's franchise store sales amounted to 100.1 trillion won, an 18.2% increase compared to the previous year.
The top three industries by sales were ▲convenience stores (26.9 trillion won, 26.8%) ▲Korean cuisine (14.5 trillion won, 14.4%) ▲chicken specialty stores (7.6 trillion won, 7.6%), accounting for 48.9% of the total. While sales increased across all industries compared to the previous year, draft beer and other pubs saw a sharp sales growth rate of 57.7% (900 billion won), foreign cuisine stores 57.7% (1.5 trillion won), and coffee and non-alcoholic beverage stores 33.2% (1.5 trillion won).
The number of franchise stores reached 286,000, a 9.7% (25,000 stores) increase from the previous year. In particular, stationery stores increased by 23.9% (400 stores), foreign cuisine stores by 23.4% (2,700 stores), and coffee and non-alcoholic beverage stores by 18.9% (4,700 stores).
The number of employees at franchise stores was 942,000, approaching one million. This represents a 12.9% (108,000 people) increase compared to the previous year. The top three industries by number of employees were ▲convenience stores (201,000 people, 21.3%) ▲Korean cuisine (143,000 people, 15.2%) ▲coffee and non-alcoholic beverages (117,000 people, 12.4%), accounting for 48.9% of the total. Sales per employee amounted to 106.3 million won, a 4.7% (4.8 million won) increase compared to the previous year.

By region, Gyeonggi-do had the highest number of franchise stores at 76,000, followed by Seoul with 49,000, Gyeongnam with 19,000, and Busan with 18,000. Notably, the number of franchise stores in the metropolitan area accounted for half (49.5%) of the total.
