Public National and Municipal Performance and Exhibition Venues Required to Host Disability Arts at Least Once a Year
Additional Detailed Criteria Added to the Amendment of the Cultural Arts Promotion Act
If There Are Two or More Performance or Exhibition Venues, At Least Twice a Year
At national and public performance venues and exhibition halls across the country, performances and exhibitions by artists with disabilities are mandatory at least once a year. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 21st that it has revised the enforcement decree by adding detailed standards to the amendment of the Cultural Arts Promotion Act, which was passed by the National Assembly last June. Accordingly, 759 institutions such as national and public performance venues and exhibition halls established by the government and local governments must hold performances and exhibitions by artists with disabilities at least once a year. In the case of cultural facilities with two or more performance venues or exhibition halls, events must be held at least twice a year.
The mandatory performances and exhibitions by artists with disabilities must meet at least one of the following three conditions: ▲ works where artists with disabilities contribute 50% or more to the creation ▲ works produced or planned by artists with disabilities (including corporate organizations represented by artists with disabilities) or works directed, staged, or conducted by them ▲ works where the proportion of participating personnel who are artists with disabilities is 30% or more. Minister Yoo In-chon of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, "By implementing the regular performance system, opportunities to experience performances and exhibitions by artists with disabilities at cultural facilities under the jurisdiction of the government and local governments will increase significantly," adding, "We hope that awareness of not only people with disabilities but also disability arts will change."
