Jeon Yong-gi "Few Lawmakers Sympathize with Lee Nak-yeon's New Party"
"The People's Party Also Failed... Factional Splits Are Essential Elements of Failure"
Jeon Yong-gi, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 18th that the possibility of incumbent party lawmakers joining Lee Nak-yeon's new party is "almost none," adding, "There have been many failed experiences of party splits, just like the People’s Party that Ahn Cheol-soo took out before, which also failed thoroughly."
Jeon appeared on YTN radio's "News King Park Ji-hoon" on the same day and predicted that there would be almost no lawmakers sympathizing with former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon's new party. Currently, within the Democratic Party, lawmakers opposing Lee’s new party have created an "Appeal to Stop Lee Nak-yeon’s New Party Initiative" and are collecting signatures from other lawmakers.
They appealed to Lee, saying, "Please immediately stop the push to establish a new party," and "Division is a guaranteed defeat. Please stay with the Democratic Party for the party’s victory in the general election to stop the incompetence and tyranny of the Yoon Seok-yeol government." After collecting more signatures over the next few days, the lawmakers plan to hold a press conference to publicly urge Lee to abandon the new party formation.
Regarding the joint signature campaign, Jeon said, "It means that we must fight within the Democratic Party and even block the possibility of a party split," adding, "Not only first-term lawmakers but also second-, third-, and fourth-term lawmakers said that we should not go toward a split. I find it hard to agree with the criticism that it is violent."
He emphasized the unity of the Democratic Party. Jeon said, "To stop the tyranny of the Yoon Seok-yeol government, the Democratic Party must unite tightly. If we become fragmented and it leads to power struggles, the public will frown upon it, so this must be prevented."

Jeon explained, "We may psychologically support former leader Lee’s new party, but we have had many failed experiences," adding, "The People’s Party that Ahn Cheol-soo led out before also failed thoroughly." Jeon added, "I believe that leaving the Democratic Party for power struggles, splitting, or forming a new party is a recipe for failure, so I think there are almost no people who will sympathize and leave."
