Seongdong-gu Majang Ansim Shopping Center Expands Majang Cheonggye Branch
Seongdong-gu Secures 2.5 Billion Won Budget to Expand Seongdong Anshim Shopping Mall Majang Cheonggye Branch as Alternative Space for Majang-dong Food Alley
Remodeling of Anshim Shopping Mall to Secure 10 Stores, Actively Promoting Relocation of Remaining Majang-dong Food Alley Stores
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is expanding the Seongdong Anshim Shopping Center Majang Cheonggye Branch (Majang Meokja Golmok Town), which was created as an alternative space for the Majang-dong food alley.
Since the fire in the Majang-dong food alley in March 2022, Seongdong-gu has been actively promoting the relocation of stores. In August, it purchased ‘Majang Cheonggye Platform 525,’ a city-owned urban regeneration hub facility nearby, and established the Anshim Shopping Center Majang Cheonggye Branch. Although 12 stores were created inside, it was insufficient to accommodate all the food alley merchants.
Accordingly, the district searched for additional alternative shopping centers nearby, but since none were suitable, it decided to expand the Anshim Shopping Center. The related budget was secured with a special adjustment grant of 2.5 billion KRW from Seoul City, which strongly sympathizes with the necessity of relocating the Majang-dong food alley merchants.
With the securing of this special adjustment grant, the district will begin full-scale expansion construction of the Majang Cheonggye Branch to ensure that the remaining stores relocate as soon as possible and the food alley maintenance is completed. By the end of December, when the expansion construction is completed, at least 10 stores will be secured.
Since early November, a total of 12 restaurants have been operating at the Seongdong Anshim Shopping Center Majang Cheonggye Branch, and after the remodeling construction is completed, 10 additional stores are expected to relocate.
The Majang-dong food alley was established around the time of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. During the government’s redevelopment project of the Majang-dong cattle slaughterhouse area, Seoul City led the relocation of businesses near Cheonggyecheon to the current address of 437 Majang-dong, Seongdong-gu. In this process, unauthorized buildings gradually appeared, which eventually led to the formation of the Majang-dong food alley.
After the sudden fire, due to aging facilities and safety issues in the food alley area, nearby residents demanded the regulation of unauthorized businesses, while the food alley merchants asserted the legitimacy of the relocation process and their right to livelihood. Ultimately, after repeated persuasion and negotiations by Seongdong-gu, the merchants were successfully relocated to the Anshim Shopping Center without major conflict.
