As the LG Twins approach their first Korean Series championship in 29 years, consumer attention is turning to the LG Group. This is due to expectations that the LG Group, known for its special affection for baseball, will hold various events if the team wins.
After the professional baseball game between Doosan and LG held on the 15th of last month at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Songpa-gu, Seoul, LG Twins manager Yeom Kyung-yeop (from the left), Lim Chan-kyu, Kim Hyun-soo, and Oh Ji-hwan are raising the regular season championship trophy.

On the 11th, the LG Twins secured a victory in Game 4 of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO Korean Series held at Suwon KT Wiz Park, bringing them just one win away from fulfilling their 29-year-old dream of winning the championship. Until last year, the team leading the Korean Series with a 3-1 record (including draws) went on to celebrate the championship champagne 94% of the time (16 out of 17 times).
Not only baseball fans but also the business community are paying attention to the actual Rolex watch and Awamori soju that the late former chairman Koo Bon-moo, who passed away in 2018, had prepared in advance, as well as the scale of the championship bonus and the extent of discounts on home appliances and other products.
Koo Kwang-mo, Chairman of LG Group, visited Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on the 7th to watch the first game of the 2023 KBO Korean Series between the KT Wiz and LG Twins.

The LG family's love for baseball has been passed down from the second generation Honorary Chairman Koo Ja-kyung to the third generation former Chairman Koo Bon-moo, and now to the fourth generation Chairman Koo Kwang-mo. Honorary Chairman Koo Ja-kyung acquired the MBC Blue Dragons in 1990, and his eldest son, former Chairman Koo Bon-moo, became the inaugural owner of the LG Twins. Currently, Chairman Koo Kwang-mo serves as the team owner.
However, in the 33-year history of the team, they have won the Korean Series only twice: in the first year of acquisition, 1990, and in 1994. Nevertheless, the LG family's passion for baseball has not waned.
It is well known among baseball fans that former Chairman Koo hosted the entire team and front office staff every season at his maternal family's home in Danmok-ri, Jinju, Gyeongnam, for a meal, an event known as the 'Danmok event.' Additionally, after the team's championship in 1994, he purchased Awamori soju, saying, "Let's toast again if we win another championship." During an overseas business trip in 1998, he bought a Rolex watch worth about 80 million KRW at the time to award the Most Valuable Player if the team won the Korean Series. The current estimated value of this watch is believed to exceed 100 million KRW.
Chairman Koo Kwang-mo is also known as a 'baseball enthusiast.' While undergoing management training working at LG Electronics and the holding company, he was known to frequently visit the stadium with employees.

If the LG Twins win the championship, LG Electronics is expected to hold various discount events on home appliances, and LG Household & Health Care on daily necessities. A company official stated, "Although nothing has been finalized, we are considering various promotions such as prize giveaways in preparation for the championship."
In fact, in September, LG Electronics held an event wishing for the LG Twins' success, offering customers who purchased home appliances a chance to win autographed glossy jumpers, uniforms, and chicken gift coupons through a lottery. They also pledged to provide membership points to all customers who purchase recommended products on their website if the team wins the Korean Series.
The excitement is not limited to LG Twins fans but is also felt among employees within the company. There is anticipation that special events for employees will be held if the team wins. The LG Group pre-distributed Korean Series tickets to employees through a lottery among affiliates.
An LG Electronics employee posted on the workplace community Blind, "It's my first championship since joining the company, so I feel a bit dazed," adding with a smile, "Since I have no experience with a championship, I don't know what kind of internal events will be held. How have other companies handled this?"

Meanwhile, attention is also focused on the actions of other companies affiliated with the broader LG family. Koo Bon-joon, chairman of the LX Group who separated from LG Group in 2021, served as the second team owner (2008?2018) following his older brother, former Chairman Koo Bon-moo, during his tenure at LG Group. Similarly, Koo Bon-neung, chairman of Heesung Group and younger brother of former Chairman Koo Bon-moo, served as the KBO commissioner. Chairman Koo Bon-joon was once a pitcher for the baseball team at his alma mater, Busan Gyeongnam Middle School, and Chairman Koo Bon-neung was also active as a baseball player during his time at Gyeongnam Middle School.
