The Democratic Party and the People Power Party Hold Rally Condemning 'Frequent Impeachments'... "Impeachment Addiction Is an Incurable Disease"
Filibuster Scheduled for the 9th Canceled
Rally Condemning Backlash Against 'Lee Dong-gwan Impeachment'
On the 9th, the People Power Party strongly condemned the impeachment motion against Broadcasting and Communications Commission Chairman Lee Dong-kwan and prosecutors, which was reported in the National Assembly plenary session, proposed by the Democratic Party of Korea.
The People Power Party had originally planned to conduct a filibuster (unlimited debate) for about five days on the Yellow Envelope Act and the three broadcasting laws, which were tabled by the Democratic Party at the plenary session that day. However, when the Democratic Party proposed the impeachment motion against Chairman Lee and prosecutors Son Jun-sung and Lee Jeong-seop, they canceled the filibuster and held a protest rally on the main stairs of the National Assembly building. People Power Party lawmakers held placards reading "Wake up, Democratic Party, the legislative dictatorship of the giant opposition party" and "Wake up, Democratic Party, the parliamentary outrage addicted to impeachment," shouting slogans in unison.
Floor leader Yoon Jae-ok said, "The Democratic Party tabled not only the four evil laws of parliamentary outrage but also the impeachment motions against Chairman Lee, Prosecutor Lee Jeong-seop, and Prosecutor Son at today's plenary session," adding, "I believe this is a parliamentary outrage that leaves a great blot on our constitutional history."
He also pointed out that the Democratic Party has been excessively proposing impeachment motions in the 21st National Assembly. Floor leader Yoon emphasized, "The filing of impeachment motions should be done under very strict conditions. However, in the 21st National Assembly, the Democratic Party is abusing the right to impeachment as a weapon with its overwhelming majority seats. I am worried that they have contracted an incurable disease called impeachment addiction."
Yoon added, "It is clear that the Democratic Party's motion will be dismissed again, but their repeated attempts at impeachment are politically motivated for next year's general election," and said, "Ahead of the general election, they intend to paralyze state affairs by tying the hands and feet of the government department overseeing broadcasting administration and create a tilted playing field favoring the Democratic Party."
Representative Kim Ki-hyun criticized in his condemnation speech, "We extended a hand for cooperation and appealed to save people's livelihoods first. However, the Democratic Party dropped a bomb of political strife. They are a truly bad opposition party that has abandoned even the minimum ethics."
Kim continued, "The Democratic Party's intention behind wrapping the president's exclusive personnel authority, guaranteed by the Constitution and laws, in a reckless impeachment is likely to be a refusal to accept the presidential election results," adding, "If the roots of broadcasting control planted throughout the previous administration are cut off, it will no longer be possible to incite the public with left-leaning public broadcasting, so the Democratic Party is focusing so much on incapacitating the Broadcasting and Communications Commission."

Meanwhile, Floor leader Yoon revealed that he had been contemplating a plan to 'stop the filibuster' to block the impeachment motion from the morning of the same day. Speaking to reporters after the protest rally, he said, "This was the plan I had been thinking about since this morning. Until just before lunchtime today, I pleaded with the Democratic Party and the Speaker of the National Assembly, saying that filibustering is a politically burdensome schedule for both parties, and adding impeachment on top of that is something that should not be done politically," adding, "I was told that the motion was officially submitted shortly after 1:40 p.m., and I thought it was really too much."
