Delivery Robots Operate on Teheran-ro in Gangnam-gu
6 Outdoor Delivery Robots in November-December Deliver Food from COEX Mall to 6 Buildings on Teheran-ro 87-gil...Avoiding Pedestrians and Obstacles, Crossing 2-3 Crosswalks and Traffic Lights in Complex Urban Autonomous Driving -
Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will conduct a pilot project for outdoor robot delivery services in the area around Teheran-ro 87-gil over two months from November to December.
The "Teheran-ro Robot Street Development Project" is a large-scale robot pilot project operated by Woowa Brothers Corp. (Baedal Minjok) in consortium with five organizations and companies including Gangnam-gu, Seoul Metropolitan Government, LG Electronics, WTC Seoul, and LX Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation. The project operates indoor and outdoor delivery robots centered around COEX Mall, which attracts 30 million visitors annually. On October 31 last year, as the first phase, indoor delivery robots were introduced that deliver from food and beverage stores in COEX Mall to offices in Trade Tower via elevator, and currently nine robots are providing the service.
The outdoor robot delivery project is the second phase following this, promoted in line with the enforcement of the amended "Intelligent Robot Development and Distribution Promotion Act (Intelligent Robot Act)" which allows autonomous robots to travel on sidewalks.
The indoor delivery robot carries food from COEX Mall stores to the COEX West Gate (City Airport Tower) entrance, where five outdoor delivery robots waiting there take over and deliver to six designated buildings around Teheran-ro 87-gil. During this process, the robots autonomously navigate the complex urban environment by using sensors such as cameras and LiDAR to avoid pedestrians and obstacles, and cross 2 to 3 crosswalks and intersections with traffic lights.
To ensure safe operation of outdoor delivery robots, the district has improved the pedestrian environment by ▲ repairing sidewalk blocks ▲ maintaining street trees for traffic light recognition ▲ attaching pedestrian safety signs such as banners and floor stickers indicating robot operation.
