Japan SBI and Taiwan PSMC Joint Venture Japanese Semiconductor Factory to Partially Start Operations in 2027
Japanese financial holding company SBI Holdings announced on the 31st that it plans to start partial operation of a semiconductor factory under construction in Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Honshu, Japan, in 2027, in partnership with Taiwan's third-largest semiconductor foundry PSMC.
Kyodo News reported that Yoshitaka Kitao, SBI Chairman, held a press conference in Tokyo on the same day and stated, "We have decided on the factory site as the 'Second Sendai Northern Core Industrial Complex' in Omura Village, Miyagi Prefecture," revealing the plan for partial operation of the factory. Huang Chung-lun, Chairman of PSMC, was also present at the press conference.
Chairman Kitao introduced, "The factory will be constructed in two phases. In the first phase, we will invest 420 billion yen (approximately 3.7 trillion KRW) to build the factory and begin partial operation from 2027."
He added, "In the second phase, we aim to expand production facilities and start full-scale operation from 2029."
The total project scale for the new semiconductor factory promoted by SBI and PSMC is over 800 billion yen (approximately 7.1 trillion KRW), and the factory will mainly produce semiconductors for automobiles and communication infrastructure. Additionally, SBI and PSMC plan to deploy about 250 Taiwanese engineers in line with the factory's operation.
The Japanese government also plans to provide subsidies for the construction of this factory.
