Japanese Police: Male Climber in His 50s from Korea Found Dead in Central Northern Alps of Honshu
Japanese police announced on the 28th that a male hiker who was found in a state of cardiac arrest on the hiking trail leading to Okuhotakadake, a 3,190-meter peak in the Northern Alps of central Honshu, on the 22nd, has been confirmed to be Korean.
According to local media, the Takayama Police Department in Gifu Prefecture stated that the deceased hiker was a man in his 50s named Kim, and the cause of death was hypothermia.
The police received a report from the mountain lodge manager around 8:25 a.m. on the 22nd that "a man had collapsed," but Kim was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Kim entered Japan through Nagoya Chubu Airport on the 19th and submitted documents to Nagano Prefecture on the same day indicating that two people planned a 4-night, 5-day hiking trip.
The police said they have not been able to contact the other hiker who accompanied Kim.
