Nobel Committee Silent on Early Leak of Laureates, Later Expresses "Regret" (Update)
On the 4th (local time), about four hours before the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Nobel Committee expressed "deep regret" over the premature leak of the list of laureates.
Hans Ellegren, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, said at a press conference held around 6:45 PM, the originally scheduled time for the announcement, "For reasons still unknown, the press release was distributed," adding, "We have been very busy since this morning trying to determine exactly what happened." He continued, "This is very regrettable," and "We express our regret over this incident."
Earlier, Swedish local media reported that the list of Nobel Chemistry Prize laureates was leaked about four hours before the official announcement. The committee accidentally sent a press release email containing the names of three laureates: Munzi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexei Ekimov. Despite this, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences remained silent for about four hours without any official statement and only expressed regret belatedly.
