Lee Seongnak, Honorary President of Gachon University, Receives 'Medical Contribution Award' from Gasong Foundation and Korean Medical Association
The Korean Medical Association and Buchaepyo Gasong Foundation announced on the 4th that they have selected Lee Seong-nak, Honorary President of Gachon University, as the recipient of the 9th Korean Medical Association Medical Contribution Award. Sponsored by the Buchaepyo Gasong Foundation, the Korean Medical Association Medical Contribution Award is given to individuals or organizations that have devotedly contributed to the foundation for the development of medicine in Korea.

View original imageHonorary President Lee Seong-nak was selected as this year’s recipient in recognition of his contributions to the introduction of medical humanities education in medical education and the enhancement of healthcare professionals’ social capabilities. Lee graduated from the University of Marburg in Germany and established research and treatment systems for Beh?et’s disease, confirming in 1996 that the cause of Beh?et’s disease is the simple herpes virus. Serving as the inaugural dean of Ajou University School of Medicine and president of the Korean Society of Medical Education, he dedicated himself to medical education for the advancement of medicine and the training of future generations. In particular, he emphasized the necessity of cultivating not only medical knowledge and skills but also humanities literacy, contributing to the introduction and strengthening of medical humanities education in medical training. He also showed deep expertise in art and was awarded the Cross of Merit by the President of Germany.
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at the 57th anniversary celebration of the Korean Medical Association on the 6th.

Founded in April 2008 through the private donations of Yoon Kwang-yeol, chairman of Dongwha Pharm, and his wife Kim Soon-nyeo, based on the philosophy that "corporate profits should be returned to society," the Buchaepyo Gasong Foundation has established various awards and supports academic research projects. In addition to the Korean Medical Association Medical Contribution Award, it jointly established the Yoon Kwang-yeol Medical Award with the Korean Medical Association in 2009, the Yoon Kwang-yeol Pharmaceutical Award in 2008, and the Yoon Kwang-yeol Pharmaceutical Contribution Award in 2019 with the Korean Pharmaceutical Association. In 2012, it also jointly established the Yoon Kwang-yeol Dental Medical Volunteer Award with the Korean Dental Association. Furthermore, it has selected university students who excel academically but face financial difficulties and provided scholarships.
