‘Ulsan Citizen's Day’ Commemoration Ceremony... A Day Created by Summoning Goryeo's Wang Geon
Awards Ceremony for Citizens in 7 Categories at City Hall Auditorium on the 25th
Do you know the origin of ‘Ulsan Citizens' Day’? There is a hint in a local noble who governed Ulsan during the reign of King Taejo Wang Geon of the Goryeo Dynasty.
Ulsan City announced that on the 25th at 3 PM, it will hold the ‘23rd Ulsan Citizens' Day Commemoration Ceremony’ at the city hall auditorium, attended by about 500 people including Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, City Council Chairman Kim Ki-hwan, award recipients, heads of institutions and organizations, and general citizens.
The event will proceed with the reading of the Citizen Charter, awarding of the Citizen Awards, commemorative speeches, and congratulatory speeches. The Citizen Charter will be read by Cha Do-jun, an outstanding young employee of the secondary battery company Korea Zinc.
Mr. Cha was selected as the reader of the 2023 Citizen Charter to share with citizens the administrative philosophy of the 8th elected term, ‘A Great New Ulsan’ and ‘Corporate City Ulsan,’ and to convey the will to foster future new industries.
The Citizen Awards will be presented to seven individuals: Lee Hyung-cheol (social service category), Ra Young-seon (filial piety and good deeds category), Ahn Jong-jun (safety and environment category), Kim Jae-hong (industry and economy category), Kwon Young-min (culture and tourism category), Lee Sang-bong (sports category), and Baek Jong-beom (academics and science & technology category). The Citizen Award is the most prestigious award given by Ulsan City, and recipients are registered in the Ulsan Museum Hall of Fame.
Separately, Lee Deok-ro, president of the Korean Association for Public Administration (professor at Sejong University), will present the ‘2023 Korea Leadership Award’ to the Mayor of Ulsan in recognition of the city’s successful administrative capabilities.
Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom of Ulsan said, “We are being recognized for achievements made by all Ulsan people united, such as the lifting of development restriction zones, differentiated electricity rates by region, and the world’s first hydrogen tram.” He added, “Ulsan is currently undergoing a great journey to regain the reputation of Ulsan as an industrial city, which was once the center of national wealth creation, and I hope Ulsan citizens take pride in this.”
‘Ulsan Citizens' Day’ began to commemorate the fact that on Jeongmyo day in the 13th year of King Taejo of Goryeo (930 AD), Park Yun-ung, a local noble of Ulsan, surrendered to Heunglyebu, whose jurisdiction area is similar to the current administrative district of Ulsan City.
