Kim Jong-wook, Head of the Coast Guard Agency, Inspects Violent Crimes and Seafood Safety in Mokpo, Gunsan, and Tongyeong
Ahead of Chuseok Holidays, Comprehensive Review of Livelihood Measures Scheduled for 25th-26th
Kim Jong-wook, Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard, will travel 1000km along major ports on the West and South Sea coasts, including Mokpo, Gunsan, and Tongyeong, on the 25th and 26th ahead of the Chuseok holiday to conduct a comprehensive inspection of holiday public safety measures such as the safety of passing vessels and the crackdown on the origin of seafood.
On the first day, Commissioner Kim will attend the opening ceremony of the Gunsan and Mokpo Regional Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) centers to observe changes in vessel traffic control and emphasize the prevention of safety accidents during the autumn fishing season and the safety of special Chuseok transportation.
The Korea Coast Guard plans to complete the establishment of regional VTS in Jeju and the East Sea area by 2026, expanding the entire control area to more than 50% of the territorial waters. By closely monitoring the entire navigation process rather than just vessel entry and exit at ports, they aim to further strengthen the function of preventing vessel accidents.
After inspecting the regional VTS, Commissioner Kim will move to the Mokpo North Port Seafood Town to check the origin of seafood and participate in the consumption of seasonal local seafood such as autumn croaker and blue crab. He will also listen to the vivid voices of maritime and fisheries workers to reflect them in maritime security public safety measures and check for any areas that need improvement.

The Rapid Response Team for Violent Crimes consists of 10 members, including a special forces unit and detectives.
Commissioner Kim will then visit Jangseungpo Port to inspect the operational status of safety equipment such as life-saving devices on passenger and cargo vessels, compliance with business regulations such as boarding within the capacity on fishing boats, and the readiness of rescue forces, thereby checking the safety management of coastal waters.
