Agreement Reached with Late Director Kim Ki-young's Family... 'Geomi Jip' to Hit Theaters on the 27th
Agreement Reached in Injunction Lawsuit Mediation for Screening Ban
The film 'Geomi Jip' will be screened in theaters as scheduled on the 27th after reaching a settlement in the injunction lawsuit filed by the family of the late director Kim Ki-young.
On the morning of the 18th, the Civil Agreement Division 60 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Im Hae-ji) held a mediation hearing for the injunction lawsuit filed by three family members, including Kim Dong-yang, the second son of director Kim Ki-young, against the film's production company Anthology Studio and others to prohibit the screening of 'Geomi Jip.'
On that day, the mediation between both parties was successful, and 'Geomi Jip' will be released on the 27th. However, the details of the settlement were not disclosed.
Previously, the family of director Kim Ki-young claimed that director Kim Ji-woon, who directed the film 'Geomi Jip,' negatively portrayed the late director, who was the inspiration for the protagonist 'Director Kim' played by actor Song Kang-ho, infringing on his personality rights and portrait rights.
In response, the production company of 'Geomi Jip' explained that it was a "fictional character." They also denied that the film was based on director Kim Ki-young or that it was a biographical film, stating that the appearance was a general depiction of film directors of that era. Nevertheless, the family filed an injunction lawsuit to ban the screening. Ultimately, the parties reached an agreement during the mediation hearing, and no court ruling was made.
The day after the trial, on the 14th, Anthology Studio, the production company, expressed, "As filmmakers who have deep respect for director Kim Ki-young, we sincerely apologize for causing concern to the bereaved family." They added, "However, the protagonist depicted in 'Geomi Jip' is a fictional character reflecting traits that any director or creator might have, regardless of the era," reiterating their position.
In an interview conducted on the 18th, Song Kang-ho said, "The film is an overall homage to the Korean film scene of the early 1970s." He emphasized, "It is a tribute to the many masters' sets and the masterpieces of that time."
