Coast Guard Cheong Transfers Search and Rescue Experience and Know-How to Indonesian Coast Guard
The Korea Coast Guard will transfer its top-level search and rescue experience and know-how to the Indonesian Maritime Police. The Coast Guard has been conducting a training program for 24 Indonesian Maritime Police (BAKAMLA) officials from the 17th to the 27th of this month.
This global training program was first launched last year as a three-year project (2022?2025) to strengthen Indonesia's maritime safety capabilities, jointly implemented by the Korea Coast Guard and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). However, it was postponed due to COVID-19 and is being conducted for the first time this year.
The training takes place at the Korea Coast Guard Education Center (Yeosu) and the Central Maritime Special Rescue Unit (Busan). The Indonesian Maritime Police will receive training on maritime survival and lifesaving, escape from capsized and sunken vessels, and surface and underwater rescue drills, acquiring the Korean Coast Guard’s education and training system as well as its top-level search and rescue infrastructure and expertise.
Ahn Seong-sik, Director of the International Information Bureau of the Korea Coast Guard, said, "Maritime cooperation with Indonesia, a key ASEAN country, is a national priority and aligns with the future strategy of the Coast Guard. We plan to further expand the Indonesian global training program going forward."
Meanwhile, at the 2nd Korea-Indonesia Maritime Security Chiefs Regular Meeting held in July, the heads of both agencies agreed to resume and continuously develop various exchange and cooperation projects, including invitation training programs to strengthen maritime rescue capabilities and joint underwater search exercises.
