Special Measures Prepared Due to Decrease in Schools Operating Sports Teams
Ten Schools Selected in Second Half Contest...Up to 50 Million Won
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee announced on the 13th that they will support the establishment of school sports teams starting this year to nurture student athletes. Following the selection of ten schools in the first round of applications in the first half of the year, an additional ten schools will be supported through the second round of applications in the second half.
This is an extraordinary measure prepared in response to the decrease in the number of schools operating sports teams. Due to the decline in the school-age population and the shift toward sports clubs, the number of schools with sports teams decreased by 26%, from 5,281 in 2012 to 3,890 in 2022. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to strengthen the existing development system by promoting the establishment of school sports teams and supporting their stable settlement.
In the first round of applications, ten school sports teams in eight disciplines including soccer, badminton, gymnastics, and fencing were selected. These are schools that established or plan to establish teams in the second half of last year or the first half of this year. They will receive up to 50 million KRW this year and up to 20 million KRW in their 2nd to 3rd years after establishment. The funds can be used for purchasing training supplies and equipment, participating in competitions, and training camps.

The second round of applications will be held from the 13th to the 26th. School sports teams in their 2nd to 3rd years that narrowly missed selection in the previous round can also apply. The Ministry stated, "Sports teams in their 2nd to 3rd years will receive up to 50 million KRW this year without follow-up support." The selection results will be announced next month.
