"Requesting Death Penalty," Geumcheon Revenge Murderer Appeals Life Sentence in First Trial
A man in his 30s who committed retaliatory murder against his ex-girlfriend, who had reported him for dating violence, appealed the life sentence he received in the first trial.
According to the legal community on the 8th, Kim (33), who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first trial on charges including retaliatory murder under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, submitted an appeal to the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Jeong Doseong) on the 4th. It is reported that Kim did not specify the reasons for his appeal. The prosecution also filed an appeal on the same day.
Kim killed A, whom he had dated for about a year, with a weapon he had prepared in advance at 7:17 a.m. on May 26, right after A reported him for dating violence and Kim had submitted a statement at the local police station. After A collapsed, Kim put her in his car and fled, but he was arrested eight hours later in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. Although there were witnesses when Kim put A in the car, Kim lied to prevent a report and left A in the vehicle, preventing her from receiving proper medical treatment.
The court found all the prosecution’s charges to be true and stated, "Considering the fact that this was a premeditated murder, the brutal method of the crime, the great culpability, the disregard for human life, and the high risk of reoffending, it is necessary to permanently isolate him from society," sentencing Kim to life imprisonment on the 31st of last month.
At the sentencing hearing held on the 7th of last month, Kim made a final statement saying, "Is it right for me to live off the country’s taxes?" and "Please carry out the death penalty on me so that such a thing never happens again." On the same day, the prosecution requested the court to sentence Kim to life imprisonment.
