Rebirth of 52-Year-Old Dongjin Market as a Landmark of Yeonnam-dong
Gu, Dongjin Market, Redevelopment into Sales and Office Facilities from Basement 3 to Ground 8 Floors... Completion Targeted for 2025
Dongjin Market in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, is located near the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail and Hongdae Entrance Station, popular spots among young people and foreigners, giving it high potential as a cultural and tourist attraction. However, having been built 52 years ago, the aging buildings pose safety vulnerabilities such as fire hazards and detract from the aesthetics, which have limited the market’s ability to attract visitors and the expansion of the Yeonnam-dong commercial district.
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) has determined that the urgent renovation of Dongjin Market, which has become hazardous and less competitive due to aging, is necessary. The district announced that it plans to officially proceed with the project, aiming for completion in 2025, after receiving applications for the market redevelopment project plan.
Dongjin Market was selected as a redevelopment project area in 1997 and the project was initiated, but the redevelopment was halted in 2010 following a cancellation request from the project implementer.
In response, Mapo-gu has been encouraging project development linked with the small-scale, low-density commercial district of Yeonnam-dong to facilitate smooth project implementation by the developer. In June, Mayor Park Gang-su visited Dongjin Market to inspect the aging facilities and listen to the opinions of market merchants, laying the groundwork for the smooth progress of the market redevelopment project.
The redevelopment site of Dongjin Market (Yeonnam-dong 227-15 and two others) covers a total area of 1,389㎡. By 2025, a sales and office facility with a total floor area of 7,779㎡, consisting of three basement levels and eight above-ground floors, is planned to be constructed here.
A district official stated, “The sales facilities from the first to the fourth floors will be organized with a balanced M/D plan (marketing and commercial facility activation plan) to enable various businesses to coexist, serving as a catalyst for revitalizing the Yeonnam-dong commercial district.”
In particular, the second-floor space, which is planned to be donated to the public, will be operated as the ‘Silppuri Center’ for residents, providing a variety of welfare services needed by the community.
Mayor Park Gang-su of Mapo-gu said, “The sales facilities in Yeonnam-dong, to be completed through the Dongjin Market redevelopment project, are expected to expand the commercial district of Yeonnam-dong, which was previously centered on small-scale businesses, and become a landmark that attracts a broader consumer base.”
