Teacher Face-to-Face Consultations Must Be Scheduled in Advance Starting from the 2024 Academic Year!
Starting from the 2024 academic year, parents who wish to consult with teachers regarding their child's grades must contact the school in advance.
On the 7th, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education announced that it will distribute 26,000 copies of the "Teacher Rights Protector Leaflet" to all teachers in the district to restore teacher authority and strengthen the protection of educational activities.
This leaflet is designed in an easy-to-understand Q&A format covering ▲ how teachers and principals should respond to complaints ▲ how the Education Office’s legal support team handles malicious complaints ▲ legal support for teachers affected by infringements on educational activities, and information on treatment and healing expense support.
To foster a new school culture, from the 2024 academic year, face-to-face consultations with teachers will be conducted only after prior contact. This allows teachers to refuse unscheduled consultations, thereby protecting them from malicious complaints and the like.
The second half of the 2023 academic year will serve as a grace period, and efforts to promote the "prior consultation application system" to parents will be strengthened.
Malicious complaints are defined as “similar complaints that persist or repeat three or more times,” “verbal abuse or other acts of personal defamation,” and “violence or threats.” In such cases, immediate contact with the Education Support Office is advised.
If a teacher personally undergoes treatment, various treatment expenses up to 2 million KRW and personal healing expenses for emotional and psychological stability up to 50,000 KRW will be supported, with application methods also explained.
The leaflet also includes information on the support provided by the Education Office’s legal support team, which has been operating since the 1st of this month. The legal support team assists with ▲ legal consultations related to the protection of educational activities and handling legal disputes ▲ representation by lawyers at the Teacher Rights Protection Committee ▲ lawyer hiring fees up to 10 million KRW ▲ and responses to malicious complaints.
Support is provided immediately upon occurrence of infringements on educational activities, and applications can be made through the Teacher Healing Center.
To improve the system so that the Education Office directly handles infringements on educational activities, the Busan Office of Education will hold a leaflet briefing session for school principals and education professionals at 10 a.m. on the 8th in the main auditorium of the Busan Education Training Institute.
Ha Yun-su, Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, stated, “From now on, our Education Office will directly respond to infringements on educational activities so that teachers no longer face difficulties alone. We will always stand with teachers, and I hope this leaflet becomes a precious protector for them.”
