'Saeicho-seo' Holds '49th Jae Memorial Ceremony'... Education Authorities Bow Their Heads
Jo Hee-yeon "Apologizes on Behalf of Seoul Education"
A memorial ceremony was held on the 49th day after the death of a teacher at Seoul Seoi Elementary School on the 4th.
On that afternoon, a memorial ceremony was held at Seoi Elementary School in Seocho-gu, Seoul, to honor the teacher who took their own life on campus on July 18. Attendees participated in the memorial service by watching a video, reading letters, and offering flowers, followed by a moment of silence in remembrance of the deceased.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho, Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent Cho Hee-yeon, Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education Superintendent Lim Tae-hee, President of the Korea Federation of Teachers' Associations Jeong Seong-guk, Chairman of the Teachers' Labor Union Federation Kim Yong-seo, and Chairperson of the National Teachers' Union Jeon Hee-young.
At the memorial, Deputy Prime Minister Lee said, "I sincerely pray for the repose of the deceased," and added, "I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family who must be painfully missing their precious daughter."
He continued, "Since July 22, every Saturday, teachers have gathered and raised earnest appeals, which we humbly accept," and said, "We reflect once again on whether we have ignored the voices of teachers regarding the deteriorated authority in schools."
He stated, "Teachers, I promise that we will stand together so that our precious teachers no longer face difficulties alone," and added, "We will listen carefully to the voices of teachers in the field and thoroughly review all aspects of education."
Superintendent Cho also said, "To the bereaved families, the staff of Seoul Seoi Elementary School, students, parents, and citizens of Seoul, I deeply apologize on behalf of Seoul education," and added, "As the superintendent who must take the lead in protecting and supporting teachers, I feel an immeasurable sense of responsibility."
He said, "We will make every possible effort to guarantee teachers the right to teach properly in safe and peaceful schools," and added, "Teachers who have risen with passion and hope to restore damaged educational relationships and to set public education right must never be hurt again."
