Ukraine's First Muslim Defense Minister Appointed... "Key Negotiator" (Comprehensive)
Zelensky Announces Dismissal of Minister Reznikov on the 3rd
Amid Defense Ministry Procurement Corruption Allegations... Part of Anti-Corruption Efforts
Successor Named as Umerov, a Crimean Tatar and Muslim
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky abruptly dismissed Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov (57), CNN and other media reported on the 3rd (local time). This decision came as part of Ukraine's 'war against corruption,' and it is seen as Ukraine, which began full-scale war following Russia's invasion in February last year, undertaking a defense system overhaul after about a year and a half.
As the successor defense minister, Zelensky nominated Rustem Umerov (41), head of the State Property Fund, a Muslim of the minority Crimean Tatar ethnicity who was an opposition politician leading the anti-Russian resistance movement. This is the first time a Muslim Crimean Tatar has been appointed to a ministerial position in Ukraine.
Ukraine Fighting Corruption... "A New Approach Is Needed"
According to reports, President Zelensky said in a video address that day, "I have decided to replace the defense minister," adding, "Reznikov has endured over 550 days of full-scale war." He further stated, "The Ministry of Defense needs a new approach and a different form of interaction with the military and society as a whole."
This decision came amid Zelensky's crackdown on corruption in Ukraine. Ukraine has declared a war against corruption with the goal of joining the European Union (EU). At the same time, Ukrainian citizens are highly sensitive to corruption issues as the end of the war remains unclear.
Minister Reznikov recently faced pressure to resign amid corruption allegations. Since taking office as defense minister in November 2021, he has visited numerous Western countries following Russia's full-scale invasion last February, securing billions of dollars in military aid. He is fluent in English and has reportedly communicated smoothly with defense ministers of Western countries.
However, in January this year, allegations surfaced that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense purchased food at inflated prices, increasing public calls for the minister to take responsibility, intensifying pressure on Reznikov to resign.
As public opinion worsened, President Zelensky recently announced plans to enact laws treating wartime corruption as treason. He also arrested oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky on charges of embezzling assets abroad. The dismissal of the defense minister is interpreted as part of this anti-corruption drive.
There have been recent speculations that Minister Reznikov might take on a diplomatic role as Ukraine's next ambassador to the United Kingdom. However, neither the Ukrainian government nor Reznikov himself has made any comments on this.
'Jewish' Zelensky Chooses 'Muslim' Opposition Politician Who Led Black Sea Grain Negotiations
The new defense minister nominee is Rustem Umerov, an opposition politician and head of the State Property Fund, who is a Crimean Tatar minority leading resistance against Russia in the Crimean Peninsula. The defense minister nominee must be approved by parliament to be officially appointed.

He has been involved in negotiations for prisoner-of-war and political prisoner exchanges, civilian evacuations from occupied territories, and participated in delegations discussing Black Sea grain negotiations with Russia. The New York Times (NYT) described him as a "key negotiator," noting that although he is an opposition lawmaker, he has played an important role in the Zelensky government post-war as a former investment banker.
Foreign media emphasize that Jewish President Zelensky appointed Umerov, a Muslim Crimean Tatar, to one of the most critical wartime positions, defense minister.
The Crimean Tatars are an indigenous minority group in the Crimean Peninsula, mostly Sunni Muslims. They are a Turkic people who settled in Crimea around the 13th century and are descendants of the Crimean Khanate, which ruled southern Ukraine and Crimea from the 15th to 18th centuries. Currently, they are estimated to make up about 12-15% of the approximately 2 million residents of Crimea.
The Mejlis, an organization established in 1991 advocating for Crimean Tatar autonomy and independence, issued a statement condemning Russia as a terrorist state and its political and military leaders as international criminals following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February last year.
Born in 1982 and of Crimean Tatar descent, Umerov and his family were forcibly relocated to Uzbekistan during the Soviet era but returned to Crimea after Crimean Tatars were allowed to repatriate in the late 1980s to early 1990s. He spent a year in the United States during high school, earned bachelor's and master's degrees in economics and finance from the National Academy of Management of Ukraine, and studied computer science and information technology at a national technical university.
