Human Rights Commission: "Yeosu City Accepts Recommendation to Correct Discrimination Against Non-College Students in Administrative Intern Recruitment"
Yeosu City has accepted the corrective recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) to eliminate discrimination between non-college students and college students in the recruitment of administrative interns.
On the 4th, the NHRCK announced that it judged that the Mayor of Yeosu and the Chairperson of the Yeosu City Council had accepted the recommendation not to restrict the eligibility for the Youth Administrative Intern Program to college students, as of the 22nd of last month.
On May 24th, the NHRCK recommended to the Mayor of Yeosu and the Chairperson of the Yeosu City Council not to limit the eligibility for the Youth Administrative Intern Program to college students, except in cases where it is necessary due to the nature of the duties. This judgment was made considering that, given the purpose of administrative interns, there is no reason to exclude youth who are not college students, and that it is difficult to conclude that the program’s requirements can only be met by those holding at least a junior college degree or currently enrolled in a university, based on the business content and qualification requirements of the administrative intern demand institutions.
In response, Yeosu City stated, "The Yeosu City Council passed a resolution in July this year to abolish the 'Yeosu City College Student Part-time Job Operation Ordinance,' which was the basis for the program," and added, "Starting next year, Yeosu City will expand the eligibility for youth interns from college students to general youth."
