Introduction of Advanced Technologies Related to Ammonia and Hydrogen
Acquired a Total of 16 Certifications and Signed Technology Cooperation MOU

HD Hyundai will showcase future technologies of eco-friendly gas carriers at Gastech, the world's largest gas event.

HD Hyundai announced that it will participate in 'Gastech 2023,' held in Singapore from the 5th to the 8th. Marking its 51st edition this year, the event is expected to attract around 40,000 visitors from 750 companies across more than 100 countries worldwide.

More than 50 executives and employees from HD Hyundai, including President Jeong Gi-seon, top management, and personnel from sales, research and development, and engineering departments, will attend. They plan to meet with global companies such as shipping lines and classification societies to introduce advanced technologies and discuss ways to advance the shipbuilding and shipping industries.

Additionally, HD Hyundai will set up a 330㎡ (approximately 100 pyeong) booth to exhibit models of LNG carriers, LPG carriers, reliquefaction units, and dual-fuel propulsion engines, welcoming customers and visitors.

During the event, HD Hyundai will secure a total of 16 technology certifications and sign memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for technical cooperation with global classification societies and companies. The company will unveil advanced technologies for ammonia and hydrogen vessels, recognized as next-generation eco-friendly ships with zero carbon emissions.

HD Hyundai will receive a Basic Approval in Principle (AIP) for the hydrogen system of a liquefied hydrogen carrier from the Norwegian classification society DNV. This system can use boil-off gas generated during navigation as fuel for an electric propulsion system composed of hydrogen engines and fuel cells, featuring a dual-fuel propulsion engine that allows fuel selection.

From Lloyd’s Register (LR) and others, HD Hyundai will obtain basic certifications for an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system for LPG carriers and ammonia bunkering vessels, leading efforts to build an ammonia ecosystem. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts in its '2050 Carbon Neutral Roadmap Report' under the 'Net Zero Scenario' that ammonia will account for 46% of all ship fuels by 2050.

In the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS), a core area, HD Hyundai will acquire certification for liquefied carbon dioxide cargo tanks and structural suitability assessments for offshore CO2 transportation. Earlier, in July, HD Hyundai secured an order for the world's largest liquefied carbon dioxide carrier.

Furthermore, HD Hyundai plans to present research and development achievements related to future eco-friendly vessels, including liquefied hydrogen carriers, ammonia and LPG as future ship fuels, and LNG cargo handling systems utilizing AI, at the Gastech Technology and Commercial Conference held during the event.

On the first day of the event, the 5th, HD Hyundai will hold its own technical seminar to introduce designs of ammonia propulsion and carriers, liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, and next-generation LNG carriers to shipping lines and classification societies.

President Jeong Gi-seon stated, “HD Hyundai has led the market by providing the most innovative maritime transportation solutions,” adding, “We will realize a sustainable future through the development of leading-edge technologies in the eco-friendly era.”
