Free Rides for All Residents, Fare Boxes Removed to Ease Boarding for the Elderly

Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do will officially implement 'free intra-county bus service' starting from the 1st of next month.

According to the county on the 30th, the free intra-county bus service is a pledge made by the county governor and is the first of its kind in Jeollanam-do (second nationwide), drawing attention as it differs from other local governments' free bus rides for the elderly and youth.

The intra-county buses, the only public transportation available to Wando-gun residents, are operated by 8 companies with 35 buses covering 68 routes. However, with a population of about 46,000 and 35% aged 65 or older, inconveniences for elderly residents and students who do not drive have persisted.

Accordingly, to support free bus operation, the county has completed administrative procedures through the enactment of an ordinance with the cooperation of the Wando County Council and consultations with related organizations.

Bus drivers have also responded positively, noting that not having to collect fares from elderly passengers with physical difficulties reduces their workload, shortens travel time, and contributes to safer driving.

Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, “I am pleased to realize a universal welfare policy that benefits all residents, going beyond policies that consider transportation-vulnerable groups,” adding, “I hope that free bus service will guarantee the mobility rights of county residents and contribute to improving transportation convenience.”
