"When Coming to School, Carry Only a 'Transparent Bag': US Schools Respond to Mass Shootings"
221 School Shooting Incidents This Year
"Increase in Schools Adopting Transparent Bag Policies"
Bulletproof Classroom Doors Also Appear on Campuses
As school shootings continue to occur in the United States, some schools have taken measures such as mandating transparent backpacks that allow the contents to be clearly visible in order to prevent such incidents.
According to the American online media Axios on the 29th (local time), at least 27 local education offices have introduced backpack regulations in the past year and a half due to the increase in school shootings. This appears to be an effort to prevent the smuggling of dangerous items such as firearms by using bags that clearly show their contents.
David Leidman, who created the 'K-12 School Shooting Database,' stated that some schools began distributing transparent backpacks as early as the mid-2000s. He said, "The number of areas adopting (transparent backpack policies) is gradually increasing," adding, "Even schools that have not experienced shootings are reflexively adopting such policies."

According to the K-12 database, 221 school shootings have occurred so far this year. Last year, there were 305 incidents, which is about nine times more than the 34 cases reported in 2013, ten years ago.
Already, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District near Houston, Texas, has mandated transparent backpacks for all middle and high school students.
However, some critics argue that the policy is ineffective. Leidman expressed concern, saying, "If all students are forced to carry transparent backpacks, every student may feel like a potential shooter. They may also feel like a potential threat."

In the Newport News school district in Virginia, measures such as mandating transparent backpacks and installing gun detectors have been implemented. This district experienced an incident earlier this year where a 6-year-old child shot their homeroom teacher in an elementary school classroom.
Also, an elementary school in Alabama began piloting a 'bulletproof room' in March to protect students from shooters. The local education office created the bulletproof room as a measure to safely protect children, teachers, and staff in the event of a school shooting.
This bulletproof room normally functions as a whiteboard. However, when the whiteboard is pulled forward, a small enclosed space unfolds, creating a room. When locked from the inside, no one can enter the bulletproof room from the outside. The exterior walls of the bulletproof room are solidly constructed to withstand most gunfire.
Alabama State Superintendent Eric Mackey said, "We must continuously think about what we need to do right now to keep children safe."
US Schools Banning Backpacks on Campus
Meanwhile, in May, public schools in Flint, Michigan, issued a complete ban on students carrying backpacks. According to The New York Times (NYT), students in Flint public schools are allowed to carry small handbags that can hold lunchboxes, but they are not permitted to bring larger bags to school.
At the time, Kevlin Jones, superintendent of Flint public schools, explained, "Because firearms can be disassembled and become difficult to identify, students can easily hide them in backpacks," adding, "To ensure school safety, we will ban backpacks and strengthen the deployment of security personnel."

However, some parents criticized this measure as excessive. Considering that firearms could still be smuggled in by hiding them under clothing or by other means, they questioned the effectiveness of the backpack ban.
