'11.2 Seconds to Transfer a Movie'... Samsung Launches New NAND Product After 1 Year and 3 Months
NAND to Grow 23% Next Year "Now Is the Darkest Moment"
Speed and Stability Enhanced with 'Pro Ultimate' Launch
For High-Resolution Tasks in Drones, Action Cams, DSLR Cameras, etc.
Samsung Electronics is launching a new memory card product for the first time in 1 year and 3 months. The company has endured the hardship of the NAND flash market shrinking by about 30% annually and is now releasing a new product.
On the 29th, Samsung Electronics announced the launch of the new SD card and micro SD card product line called 'Pro Ultimate.' The micro SD cards will be available starting today, and the SD cards will be released in October.
The Pro Ultimate product line is designed for professional photographers and creators. It helps facilitate large-capacity content work smoothly. It provides stable performance during repetitive data reading, writing, and erasing tasks. The risk of data loss has been minimized. Unlike DRAM, NAND does not lose data even when the power is turned off and on.
What is noteworthy is that Samsung has released new products while enduring the 'harsh winter' of the NAND market. The NAND market is expected to recover next year. According to the first-quarter survey by market research firm Omdia, NAND market sales this year are expected to decline by 27.2% to $43.229 billion (approximately 57.26 trillion KRW) compared to the same period last year. Next year, sales are projected to increase by 22.9% to $53.142 billion (approximately 70.39 trillion KRW). The memory card market is also expected to grow. From this year through 2027, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is expected to reach 13.8%. In other words, Samsung has endured the crisis and seized the opportunity.
This product line offers the highest level of UHS-I (a memory card standard introduced by the SD Association) with a maximum read speed of 200MB per second and a write speed of 130MB per second. A speed of 200MB per second means that a 1.3GB movie can be transferred from a PC to the memory card in 11.2 seconds. For micro SD cards, the A2 (Application Performance Class) rating is separately supported. This ensures smooth continuous reading, writing, and multitasking operations without interruption. The A2 standard supports a minimum of 4000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) for random read speed and 2000 IOPS for random write speed.
The controller's 'ECC (Error Correction Code) engine' has been enhanced to reduce data loss. The ECC engine detects and corrects NAND errors. In this product line, one type of ECC, LDPC (Low Density Parity Check), has been increased from 1KB to 2KB. It safely protects data even under extreme external conditions such as water resistance, drops, abrasion, X-rays, magnetic fields, and temperature changes. Power efficiency has improved by 37% compared to previous models.
Another attractive feature is easy compatibility with various devices. SD cards are compatible with DSLR and mirrorless cameras, camcorders, PCs, and laptops. Micro SD cards can be used with smartphones, tablets, portable game consoles, action cams, drones, PCs, and other devices.
Han-gu Son, Executive Director of the Brand Product Business Team at Samsung Electronics Memory Division, said, "As high-resolution content generated by devices such as drones, action cams, and DSLR cameras increases, we need to create products that allow large-capacity content to be worked on without interruption." He added, "Pro Ultimate offers a new controller and data protection features to meet the demands of creators and professionals."
