"I will make a mark after eating home-cooked meals."
This is the determined resolve of Im Sung-jae ahead of the Tour Championship (total prize money $75 million), which will conclude the 2022/2023 season of the PGA Tour. Only the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup points standings, converted from their season performance up to the second playoff event, the BMW Championship, will participate. The tournament will be held over four days starting on the 24th (local time) at East Lake Golf Club (par 70, 7,346 yards) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The Tour Championship adjusts starting scores based on FedEx Cup rankings. The No. 1 ranked player in the FedEx Cup starts with a 10-under par stroke bonus. Players ranked 2nd to 5th start between 8-under and 5-under par, 6th to 10th at 4-under par, 11th to 15th at 3-under par, 16th to 20th at 2-under par, 21st to 25th at 1-under par, and 26th to 30th at even par. The Tour Championship offers a total bonus prize pool of $75 million, with $18 million (approximately 24.1 billion KRW) awarded to the winner and $500,000 (approximately 670 million KRW) to the last place finisher.
Sungjae Im is challenging for the victory at the Tour Championship, the final third round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
View original imageIm Sung-jae has qualified for the Tour Championship for five consecutive years since his rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2019. He is on an upward trend with back-to-back top 10 finishes, placing tied 6th at the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and 7th at the BMW Championship. Ranked 17th in the FedEx Cup standings, he starts with a 2-under par bonus. Last year, Im achieved the best-ever finish by a Korean player at the Tour Championship, finishing as runner-up.
The fiercely competitive East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta is close to Im Sung-jae’s current residence. He said, "My driver accuracy has improved, allowing me to play with stability," and added, "The course suits my playing style well, so I plan to play aggressively."
Scotty Scheffler (USA), ranked No. 1 in the FedEx Cup, is aiming for his first title. Last year, although he started with a 10-under par bonus, he lost the championship trophy to Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), who began in 7th place. Viktor Hovland (Norway), winner of the BMW Championship, is ranked 2nd in the FedEx Cup, while McIlroy, the world No. 2 and defending champion, is ranked 3rd. If McIlroy wins again this year, he will extend the record for most Tour Championship victories to four.
