HD Hyundai announced that it will increase menus featuring rockfish and abalone at 86 in-house cafeterias operated across its nationwide business sites, including the Pangyo Global R&D Center, where 17 group affiliates are located, to help "revitalize the fishing village economy."
Generally, rockfish and abalone are classified as high-priced ingredients, making it difficult to use them as materials for in-house meals. However, HD Hyundai decided to provide support due to the recent sharp decline in the consumption of rockfish and abalone, which has deepened the concerns of fishermen.
In particular, considering that the total number of people dining within the HD Hyundai group (based on daily figures) is about 55,000, the expected additional consumption by the end of the year is estimated to reach 100 tons. This corresponds to about 6% of the rockfish and abalone shipped last month, which is expected to be a great help to fishermen.
To this end, on the 22nd, HD Hyundai signed a "Win-win Cooperation Agreement for Fishermen Support and Revitalization of the Fishing Village Economy" with the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives and Hyundai Green Food. Through this, HD Hyundai will receive seafood and recipes from the Fisheries Cooperative and Hyundai Green Food in the future.
HD Hyundai’s company-wide effort to help fishermen stems from the judgment that the fishing village economies around business sites such as Ulsan, Gunsan, Yeongam, and Seosan are severely depressed. In fact, aquaculture fishermen are reportedly struggling to secure sales channels due to economic recession, decreased consumption, and falling sales prices.
The "Revitalization of the Fishing Village Economy" campaign also involved Kwon Oh-gap, Chairman of HD Hyundai. Previously designated as the second participant in the "Seafood Consumption Challenge," Chairman Kwon supported the expansion of seafood consumption by dining with employees on seafood in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, on the 29th of last month.
