CPTED stands for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, a crime prevention technique from advanced countries that prevents crime in advance through urban environmental design. Through this business agreement, Dongdaemun-gu will conduct a pilot project to establish a safety infrastructure using cutting-edge smart technology targeting public restrooms, the first of its kind among local governments nationwide.

Based on cooperation with the Dongdaemun Police Station, two public restrooms with the highest number of emergency bell reports (Cheongnyangni-dong Food Alley, Imun 2-dong Imun 1 Embankment) were selected as pilot sites, and with support from LG U+, ‘LG U+ Smart Radar’ devices were installed inside the public restrooms.

Since CCTV installation was avoided due to privacy concerns, public restrooms were considered safety blind spots. The new system enables real-time detection of internal restroom situations and establishes a cooperative system for police officers to promptly respond in case of criminal incidents.

The ‘LG U+ Smart Radar’ device uses high-frequency (60GHz) radar to sense only human movements without invading privacy and analyzes them through an advanced AI monitoring system. It detects suspicious lingering, slipping, and other abnormal behaviors inside public restrooms and quickly notifies the Dongdaemun Police Station so that anyone can use the restrooms with peace of mind.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “Through this agreement, we expect to build a system that integrates administration and smart technology to respond immediately in emergencies,” and added, “We will continue to discover new projects to create a smart city where residents can live safely.”

Dongdaemun-gu is making every effort to become a smart city by applying smart technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) to administration and welfare, promoting various projects including the establishment of smart poles and health management for the elderly using smart devices.
