Cockroaches Survive Even in Flight... Proving Their Tenacious Vitality
Passenger-Captured Cockroach Video Goes Viral
The tenacious vitality of cockroaches has been proven once again. A cockroach clinging to an airplane window, enduring thousands of meters in altitude, was captured in China.
On the 18th local time, Chinese media reported on a video filmed by passenger A on the 16th, showing a cockroach firmly attached to the outside of an airplane window.
The airplane was en route from Yunnan Province to Zhejiang Province in China. Passenger A had imagined beautiful scenery unfolding outside the airplane window, but the reality was completely different. A large cockroach was clinging to the window, alive and moving.
A said, "It was my first time seeing a cockroach on an airplane, so I recorded the video."
A added, "Even though the airplane had reached a high altitude, the cockroach maintained its shape. It was quite large. Every time the airplane moved up or down, it looked like the cockroach was alive and moving simultaneously."
A said, "The cockroach did not come inside the airplane, so my companions were not uncomfortable. I was able to quietly observe a cockroach that I usually don't get to see closely. The flight was boring, but having the cockroach stuck to the window was somewhat entertaining. It was an unexpected amusement, so I deliberately did not inform the flight attendants."
Even after landing, the cockroach remained attached to the window. A said, "I think it might have been trying to return to its original home in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province."
The vitality of cockroaches is a subject of amazement. A cockroach can lay eggs throughout its life after mating just once. This is the secret to their survival through ice ages and asteroid impacts on Earth.
Research has also shown that reproduction is possible among females without males. A research team from Hokkaido University in Japan kept three female cockroaches together, and within ten days, they reproduced offspring using unfertilized eggs.

The movement speed of cockroaches is about 25 cm per second, faster than other insects. They can flatten their bodies by more than 20% of their original thickness, allowing them to easily escape through narrow spaces.
