'Still Cruel Slaughter'... Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police Investigating Slaughter Site in Ansan
Gyeonggi Province has uncovered a site where dogs were cruelly slaughtered and has launched an investigation.
The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police announced on the 20th that on the 18th, they uncovered a site where dogs were cruelly slaughtered at a dog breeding farm in Sangnok-gu, Ansan City, and have begun an investigation.
Through about two weeks of undercover investigation, the special judicial police uncovered the site. The farm was raising around 20 meat dogs, and the special judicial police found two dog carcasses at the scene. They are investigating on suspicion of violating the Animal Protection Act.
According to the current Animal Protection Act, acts that cause the death of animals by cruel methods such as hanging are punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.
The special judicial police are also investigating allegations of unreported food waste disposal.
Since Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province ordered a crackdown on illegal activities to prevent recurrence of similar animal abuse cases like the 'Yangpyeong dog carcass incident' in March, four illegal slaughter sites including this one have been uncovered.
Governor Kim Dong-yeon emphasized the importance of animal welfare and reorganized the Livestock and Forestry Bureau into the 'Livestock Animal Welfare Bureau' in December last year, establishing the nation's first 'Animal Welfare Division' and 'Companion Animal Division.' Additionally, an 'Animal Abuse Prevention Team' was created within the Special Judicial Police to firmly address illegal acts of animal abuse.
