Today (the 4th), the death sentence was carried out on a Korean man who was sentenced to death in China for selling a large quantity of drugs. This is the first actual execution of a Korean prisoner sentenced to death in China in nine years since 2014.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the death sentence was carried out today (the 4th) on a Korean national who was sentenced to death in China for drug trafficking. China notified our side of this in advance through diplomatic channels.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "Our government regrets the execution of our national from a humanitarian perspective," and explained, "Since the death sentence was handed down, our government has repeatedly requested through various channels to reconsider or postpone the execution on humanitarian grounds."
The man was sentenced to death for attempting to sell 5 kilograms of methamphetamine in China. According to Article 347 of the Chinese Criminal Law, smuggling, selling, transporting, or manufacturing 1 kilogram or more of opium, or 50 grams or more of methamphetamine or heroin, is punishable by death, life imprisonment, or imprisonment of 15 years or more.

So far, there have been six cases of executions carried out on Korean nationals in China. One person each in 2001 and 2004, and four people in 2014, all of whom were drug offenders and were executed.
