Seoul Jung-gu, Thorough Heatwave Response
Seoul Jung-gu Takes Thorough Measures to Prevent Heatwave Damage
As heatwave warnings continue across Seoul, Jung-gu (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) has taken thorough measures to prevent heatwave damage.
When a heatwave advisory is issued, Jung-gu staff call 352 vulnerable individuals within 24 hours to check on their well-being. They also visit small-scale construction sites to ensure workers are taking regular breaks. The area around Seoul Station, known for its many boarding houses and homeless people, is patrolled daily to monitor for heat-related illnesses.
They check daily that air conditioners installed in cooling shelters, outdoor shade tents, cooling/heating chairs, cooling fog systems, and fountains are all functioning properly. The water refrigerators called “Oh! Bingo” placed in five parks, which used to be stocked with 600 bottles of water per day, are now filled without any limit on quantity.
More water is sprayed on the roads as well. The number of water spraying vehicles has increased from six to ten, and their daily operation frequency has risen from twice to three times to cool down the heat. Residents are informed about heatwave action guidelines and the use of cooling shelters through SNS and text messages.
Cool water playgrounds are also operated in parks. Visitors can enjoy various experiential facilities such as swimming pools, slides, air bounces, water gun play, as well as magic and bubble performances. The Dasan Children’s Park water playground operated from August 1 to 2, and the Hunryeonwon Park water playground will open from August 5 to 6.
On the afternoon of August 2, Mayor Kim Gil-seong visited the Dasan Children’s Park water playground to check for any safety risks or inconveniences. Afterwards, he visited the public officials’ rest area “Euljiro Gounjari” and encouraged about 100 on-site workers by delivering 22 watermelons. “Euljiro Gounjari” is a rest area exclusively for public officials, which Jung-gu opened nationwide for the first time in January last year.
On August 3, he visited the Myeongdong Community Center’s sports facilities and heard complaints from residents that “the air conditioner is broken, causing difficulties in program activities,” and instructed the management department to replace the air conditioner.

Mayor Kim Gil-seong encouraged the on-site workers, saying, “Every morning when I come to work, I see clean alleys and lush, beautifully maintained green spaces, and I think of the hands that have worked hard in the heat to care for them. Today, I finally get to meet you and express my gratitude.” He also added, “Please do not overexert yourselves during the heatwave and follow work guidelines to stay healthy this summer.”
