Through this agreement, the two cities have created an opportunity to strengthen mutual cooperation and improve relations in areas of common interest such as administration, economy, culture, sports, and festivals.
The two cities first established ties by signing the Pohang City-Ulleung County Joint Development Agreement in June 2007. Since then, Pohang City has continued exchanges by delivering disaster recovery consolation goods to Ulleung County, which suffered from heavy snowfall in January, and encouraging Ulleung County students who crossed the sea to take the college entrance exam in Pohang last year.
Ulleung County has also maintained a friendly relationship by donating funds raised by public officials when Pohang City suffered major damages from events such as Typhoon Hinnamnor last year and the earthquake in 2017, as well as providing equipment and manpower for damage recovery.
Additionally, Pohang City has participated in Ulleung County’s representative festival, the Squid Festival, and Ulleung County has taken part in Pohang City’s flagship event, the Pohang International Fireworks Festival, dispatching delegations to each other’s local festivals and events to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship.
This sisterhood agreement is expected to further strengthen mutual cooperation to enhance the interests and quality of life of residents in both cities through the activation of exchanges among various private organizations and sustainable exchanges.
County Governor Nam Han-kwon said, “Let us use this sisterhood agreement as a catalyst to build a win-win development network and expand the scope of exchanges based on our commonalities,” adding, “I hope that the relationship between the two cities will become stronger by promoting various exchanges beyond administration into the private sector.”
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “Pohang City and Ulleung County share joys and sorrows historically, geographically, and culturally,” and added, “Through this sisterhood agreement, we will promote exchange projects that can provide practical benefits to citizens and strive to establish a cooperative system to achieve regional joint development.”
