"Preparation Needed with Various Insurance Riders"
It has been identified that various car accidents, including drunk driving, increase during the summer months of July and August compared to usual. There is advice to pay more attention to safety and to prepare with insurance products, among other measures.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service on the 26th, the average monthly number of car accidents during the summer seasons from 2020 to 2022 was 326,393 cases, which is a 6.0% increase compared to normal times.
Specifically, accidents involving drunk driving and unlicensed driving increased. These were 1,441 and 529 cases on average per month, respectively, representing increases of 3.9% and 86% compared to usual. In the case of drunk driving accidents, accidents involving drivers under 20 years old and over 65 years old increased significantly by 16.7%.
Rental car accidents also rose by 6.9% compared to normal, totaling 9,823 cases. Accidents involving drivers under 30 years old, who generally have less driving experience, increased sharply by 12.7%.
Compensation-exempt accidents caused by people driving who were not included in the car insurance driver coverage were also recorded at an average of 1,756 cases per month. This is an 11.4% increase compared to usual. It is presumed that this is due to frequent situations such as switching drivers with others during vacations or borrowing vehicles from acquaintances.
As accidents increased, emergency dispatches by insurance companies also rose. Excluding battery charging, the number of cases was 790,754 on average per month during the summer, a 14.7% increase compared to usual. In particular, emergency rescue and urgent towing cases directly related to car accidents increased by 21.5% to 337,622 cases during the summer.
