Jeju Man in His 30s Indiscriminately Assaults Elderly Strangers
Arrest Made After Reviewing CCTV Footage of the Incident Scene
A man in his 30s was arrested by the police in Jeju Island for randomly assaulting an elderly man he did not know, simply because the man was standing on a crosswalk.
On the 25th, the Jeju Dongbu Police Station announced that they had detained a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of assault and injury for attacking an elderly man at a crosswalk.
According to the police, Mr. A is suspected of randomly assaulting a woman in her 70s at a crosswalk near the Samhwa district in Jeju City at around 8:50 a.m. on the 16th. He is also accused of assaulting a man in his 80s at a nearby crosswalk four days earlier, on the 12th.
The police analyzed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the area around the crime scene and apprehended Mr. A on the 20th. However, he reportedly refused to testify, claiming he "does not remember."
The police believe that Mr. A assaulted the elderly without any reason and, considering the risk of reoffending, applied for a pre-arrest warrant, which was issued on the 24th, the day before his detention.
Further investigation by the police revealed that Mr. A had assaulted a driver in a parking lot of a certain mart in Jeju City on the 9th, and a tourist in their 20s near a bus stop on the 12th. It was understood that the victims did not immediately report the incidents due to fear of retaliation.
Meanwhile, the families of the elderly assault victims personally sought out witnesses to the crimes.
