‘Minimizing Crop Damage’ Pohang City Conducts Eco-Friendly Aerial Pest Control for Rice Diseases and Pests
Temporary Joint Pest Control in Eupmyeon Areas
1st Phase Source Blocking and Labor Reduction
Pohang City will conduct eco-friendly aerial pest control for rice diseases and pests on 5,461 hectares of rice paddies in eup and myeon areas, including Guryongpo-eup, from the 25th of this month to the 2nd of next month.
The aerial pest control for rice diseases and pests is a project that temporarily conducts joint control of late-stage rice diseases and pests such as rice blast, rice leaf blight, and rice stem borer at the optimal time for control from late July to early August, aiming to block primary infection sources and reduce labor.
In particular, since 2020, the city has been using fully eco-friendly crop protectants nationwide for the first time, which are harmless to other crops around the paddies and to humans, and have been proven safe for honeybees.
This aerial pest control is scheduled to start in Heunghae-eup on the 25th, followed by Gibuk-myeon, Gigae-myeon, Janggi-myeon, Guryongpo-eup, Homigot-myeon, and Singwang-myeon. The control will be conducted about 18 times during the morning hours from sunrise, considering the pesticide's crop penetration effect.
From the 26th to the 28th, 11 unmanned helicopters will be deployed to conduct pilot control over 1,420 hectares in Cheongha-myeon and Songra-myeon areas. Unmanned helicopters have the advantage of no minimum altitude limit, allowing precise low-altitude spraying compared to manned aircraft.

Kwon Ki-hyeok, Director of Technology Extension Division, said, “This year, due to frequent heavy rains and a hot and humid environment, damage to crops caused by diseases and pests is expected, so we will thoroughly carry out aerial pest control,” and urged, “Farmers should also strengthen monitoring and late-stage control.”
