Capturing 'Jeju' in Fish Cake... Samjin Fish Cake Opens Local Flagship Store
Samjin Fish Cake, a representative fish cake brand of the Republic of Korea, opened its first local flagship store, ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU,’ on the 22nd at ‘D&Department Jeju’ located in Tapdong, Jeju City.
The ‘local flagship store’ is a store that maximizes the brand’s ‘local’ value, characterized by selling menus using sustainable local marine resources.
Samjin Fish Cake, a brand that has led local-based industrial innovation, has been preparing a flagship store that maximizes local value since last year.
Last year, Jeju Island, a golden fishing ground accounting for 50% of Korea’s coastal fishery production and home to diverse marine resources, was selected as the first location for the local flagship store, and menu development using sustainable marine resources has been underway.
The main ingredient used in the signature menu of ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU,’ the ‘dalgogi’ (a type of fish), is a species commonly caught off the coast of Jeju, known for its high protein content and excellent nutritional value.
However, during processing and distribution, it often falls short of weight standards and is used as feed for aquaculture or discarded. ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU’ has set the core value of ‘creating a virtuous cycle of resources’ by upcycling such low-quality dalgogi instead of discarding it and plans to operate the store accordingly.
Upcycling is a term combining ‘upgrade’ and ‘recycling,’ also known as ‘sae-hwalyong’ (new use).
‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU’ not only uses imperfect dalgogi but also incorporates various raw materials grown in Jeju, such as squid, red shrimp, cuttlefish, and webfoot octopus, to create flavors unique to Jeju. The products and packaging also reflect Jeju’s scenery, capturing the island’s distinctive features and colors.
Located within a 15-minute drive from Jeju International Airport, ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU’ is housed in D&Department in Tapdong, Jeju City.
D&Department is a curated shop that promotes ‘long life design,’ continuously introducing producers and products that have lasted a long time while pursuing regional coexistence. It values locality and sustainability as key principles, aligning perfectly with what ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU’ aims for, leading to the store’s inclusion.
At ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU,’ customers can find finger foods using dalgogi and Jeju specialties such as ▲‘Hyunmuan Fish Cake Croquette’ and ▲‘Jeju Monyang Fish Cake,’ as well as ▲‘Jeju Badang Fish Cake Stick Set,’ a great souvenir for Jeju travelers. These products are region-exclusive and available only at ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU.’
The ▲‘Hyunmuan Fish Cake Croquette’ is a signature menu of Samjin Fish Cake, shaped and colored to resemble Jeju’s basalt rock.
It is based on fish cake dough with added dalgogi fillet and filled with various Jeju specialties such as red shrimp, cuttlefish, and cheese. The more you chew, the more you can enjoy the unique mild flavor of dalgogi and the diverse tastes of the fillings all at once.
The exterior is colored using squid ink to express the black color and rough surface texture of Jeju basalt.
The ‘Hyunmuan Fish Cake Croquette’ comes in four varieties: ‘Red Shrimp Fish Cake Croquette,’ ‘Jeju Cuttlefish Fish Cake Croquette,’ ‘Jeju Ranch Cheese Fish Cake Croquette,’ and ‘Jeju Chili Fish Cake Croquette.’
‘Jeju Monyang Fish Cake’ is a uniquely shaped fish cake modeled after Dolharubang, Jeju’s representative symbol. It features a salty and savory taste with added Jeju ranch cheese and sausage.
The ‘Jeju Badang Fish Cake Stick Set,’ named after the Jeju dialect word for Jeju Sea, ‘Jeju Badang,’ is a fish cake bar set made with Jeju-sourced ingredients, including ‘Udo peanuts,’ ‘Jeju cuttlefish,’ ‘sausage,’ and ‘smoked cheese,’ offering four different flavors.
This gift set can be stored at room temperature, making it convenient as a snack during Jeju trips and an easy-to-gift special souvenir from Jeju.
Additionally, customers can also find fish cake gift sets and popular fish cake products previously available at Samjin Fish Cake’s direct stores.
To commemorate the store opening, ‘SAMJINAMOOK IN JEJU’ will hold an event until August 31, offering customers who purchase over 10,000 KRW two types of ‘Jeju Badang Fish Cake Sticks’ (smoked cheese flavor and sausage flavor) as gifts. This event is limited in quantity and may end early.
