Kim's defense acknowledged all the charges brought by the prosecution but requested a psychiatric evaluation, arguing that Kim was of diminished mental capacity at the time of the crime. The court requested the submission of evidence that would justify conducting the psychiatric evaluation.
Kim was indicted for killing his father (70) at their home in Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu, Seoul, on May 29, and hiding the body in the apartment's underground water tank. The prosecution judged that Kim had premeditated the crime based on factors such as committing the act while the mother was away, purchasing blue tape to cover the apartment's closed-circuit television (CCTV) in advance, and integrated psychological analysis results including brain waves and behavior.
Kim initially denied the charges immediately after his arrest but confessed to the crime after undergoing a pretrial detention hearing (warrant review) on May 30, the second day of the investigation.
