Lee Visits Iksan Flood Site... Assures "Don't Worry" in Response to Request for "Special Disaster Area Declaration"
Lee Jae-myung Visits Flood Damage Site and Shelter in Iksan, Jeonbuk on the 18th
"Appears to Qualify for Special Disaster Area Declaration... Efforts for Practical Compensation"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, visited the flood damage site in Iksan, Jeonbuk on the 18th to inspect the flood damage situation and promised to take the lead in improving systems and preparing measures to enable realistic compensation and support.
On the morning of the same day, Lee visited Mangsung-myeon, Iksan City, where farmland flooding damage occurred, and listened to residents about the damage situation and their support requests.
Lee inspected the damage situation of greenhouse farms growing watermelons and lettuce, and in response to residents' complaints about the causes of repeated flood damage, he said, "Structurally, securing disaster prevention facilities will be an important national task in the future. The central government must significantly increase investment in disaster preparedness facilities."
He added, "The country must invest in expanding basic disaster prevention facilities in the long term. That seems to be the most important national task at the moment."
On this day, residents asked Lee to make every effort to have the Iksan area declared a 'Special Disaster Zone.'
Lee responded, "The government will naturally consider it," and said, "The Democratic Party will also naturally request the government to declare it a special disaster zone, and we will do our best to ensure the government accepts this." Regarding some residents' concerns that only the Yeongnam region might be declared a special disaster zone, he reassured them by saying, "Please don't worry too much."
He also emphasized that he would actively work on preparing realistic compensation and support related to flood damage.
Lee said, "The Democratic Party will pay attention to ensuring that compensation and support can be realized, and especially strive to enable institutional improvements."
Lee then moved to Yongan Elementary School, where a shelter for flood victims was set up, and continued his on-site schedule by inspecting relief supplies. At a residents' meeting held there, Lee said, "The central government must invest a large-scale budget to build disaster prevention facilities based on completely different standards than before," and added, "We will work with the central government to move in that direction."

He comforted the residents by saying, "I understand how distressing and desperate this difficult situation must be," and said, "It is natural for the state to step in during difficult times. The central government, Jeonbuk Province, and Iksan City will join forces to support you." He promised, "We will handle necessary systems or legislation, and since the Democratic Party does not have much direct authority, we will request sufficient compensation support and establishment from the central government, and also request maximum support for the personnel and equipment needed immediately."
