First Trial to Resolve LG Family Inheritance Dispute... "Only Legal Representatives Attended"
The first trial will be held on the 18th regarding the lawsuit filed by the three LG family women against Chairman Koo Kwang-mo for the division of inherited property.
On the 18th, the 11th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court will call the legal representatives of both parties in the morning to confirm the positions of the plaintiff and defendant and to coordinate procedures necessary for the trial, including plans for examination and evidence presentation. Both sides will explain their claims to the court and decide on the witnesses and evidence to be presented in future hearings.
In fact, this is the first trial of the inheritance recovery lawsuit filed by the mother and younger sisters against Chairman Koo.
Chairman Koo is known not to attend the trial. Since neither the plaintiff nor the defendant is obligated to appear, only the legal representatives of both sides are expected to attend.
Previously, the LG family completed the inheritance of most of the property to the eldest son and the management rights according to the so-called eldest son succession principle. Regarding the property left by the late Chairman Koo Bon-moo, Koo Kwang-mo’s father, the inheritance was finalized after several family consultations over five months following the death. The inherited property amounts to about 2 trillion won, including 11.28% of LG Corporation shares, with Chairman Koo inheriting 8.76% of his father’s shares.

However, on February 28, Koo’s mother, Mrs. Kim Young-sik, and two younger sisters, Koo Yeon-kyung, head of the LG Welfare Foundation, and Koo Yeon-su, filed an inheritance recovery lawsuit against Chairman Koo at the Western District Court, demanding a redivision of the inherited property. The three women claim that they only later learned that there was no will from the late chairman and argue that the property should be redistributed according to the statutory inheritance ratio (spouse 1.5 to each child 1).
