Over three days, more than 500mm of rain fell in the Chungcheong region. Typically, the monsoon season lasts about a month, but the rainfall over the past three weeks has exceeded the average monsoon precipitation.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, from the 13th to 4 p.m. on the 16th, major rainfall amounts were ▲Jeongsan (Cheongyang) 570.5mm ▲Gongju 511mm ▲Hamra (Iksan) 499.5mm ▲Sejong 486mm ▲Dongro (Mungyeong) 485.5mm ▲Gunsan 480.3mm ▲Sangdang (Cheongju) 474mm ▲Samgakbong (Jeju) 470mm, among others.
From June 25-26, when the monsoon season began, until the 15th of this month, the central region received an average of 489.1mm, the southern region an average of 473.4mm, and Jeju an average of 307.7mm of rainfall over three weeks.
Compared to the average monsoon rainfall (1991?2020 average) (Central 378.3mm, Southern 341.1mm), the central region saw 29.3% more, and the southern region 38.8% more. Jeju recorded about 88.2% of its average (348.7mm).
The rainfall over the past three weeks has surpassed the average monsoon precipitation. The average monsoon duration is 31.5 days in the central region, 31.4 days in the southern region, and 32.4 days in Jeju.
Cumulative rainfall at major points (June 25?July 15) includes ▲Jeju Hallasan Samgakbong 1131.0mm ▲Chungnam Cheongyang-gun Jeongsan-myeon 913.5mm ▲Gyeongbuk Yeongju-si Isan-myeon 904.5mm ▲Gyeongbuk Mungyeong-si Dongro-myeon 864.5mm ▲Chungbuk Boeun-gun Songnisan-myeon 862.0mm ▲Jeonbuk Jangsu-gun 819.5mm ▲Jeonnam Gurye-gun Seongsamjae 820.5mm ▲Jeonbuk Gunsan-si 790.1mm ▲Gwangju 747.7mm, among others.
This year’s monsoon rainfall ranks as the fourth highest in the past 10 years based on the central region.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, heavy rain warnings are currently in effect for the southern inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, the Chungcheong region, the southern region, and Jeju Island. Some areas along the southern coast of Jeonnam and the coastal areas of Gyeongnam are experiencing very heavy rain of 30?60mm per hour accompanied by thunder and lightning.
By the 18th, more than 300mm of heavy rain is expected in the Chungcheong region, Jeonbuk, and northern inland Gyeongbuk. The stationary front is slowly moving northward, likely causing concentrated heavy rainfall. In the Jeonnam and Gyeongnam regions, 30?60mm per hour rain is expected until early tomorrow morning, while in the Chungcheong, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk regions, heavy rain of 30?60mm per hour will fall intensively from tonight until tomorrow morning.
In the Chungcheong and Gyeongbuk regions, torrential rain of 30?60mm per hour will continue from dawn to daytime on the 18th. Some areas in Chungcheong, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk may experience rainfall rates of up to 80mm per hour, so precautions should be taken to prevent additional damage.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s medium-term forecast, rain will continue across most parts of the country until the 19th. From the 20th to 21st, except for Jeju, the rain will temporarily subside, but it will resume nationwide from the 22nd to 24th. Rain is expected mainly in the central region on the 25th and 26th.
