Lee Jae-myung Visits Osong Underpass Site: "Regrettable, Hope for Swift Resolution"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, visited the site of the Cheongju Osong underpass, which was flooded due to heavy rain causing casualties, on the 16th.
On that morning, Lee, dressed in civil defense uniform, went to Gungpyeong 2nd underpass and received a report on the cause and current status of the accident from Democratic Party lawmakers who had arrived earlier. Lawmakers Byun Jae-il, Do Jong-hwan, Kim Gyo-heung, Lee Jang-seop, Lim Ho-seon, and Cheon Jun-ho were also present.
After hearing the explanation about the casualties, Lee said, "It is truly unfortunate," and added, "We need to find as much help as possible to quickly manage the situation."
Lee and his party observed the site from outside the control line for about 20 minutes, watching drainage work, but did not receive a briefing from the fire authorities. When suggested to get closer to observe the site, he replied, "It would be better not to."
Lee told reporters, "It is a truly heartbreaking scene," and said, "I pray for the victims and offer my condolences to the bereaved families who must be grieving deeply."
