The Seoul Philharmonic announced on the 12th that it will hold regular concerts conducted by Van Zweden at the Lotte Concert Hall on the 20th and 21st of this month.
Earlier, Van Zweden stepped in as conductor to replace the former Seoul Philharmonic director Osmo V?nsk?, who was injured in a fall accident in January, and rehearsed with the orchestra in advance. This will be his first official conducting with the Seoul Philharmonic.
In this concert, Van Zweden will fill the stage with Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 without any soloists.
Yap Van Zweden explained, "I will present a combination that allows the audience to feel the adaptability and flexibility transitioning from classical to romantic by interpreting Beethoven and Tchaikovsky in completely different colors."
Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, praised by Wagner as the "apotheosis of dance," is considered a masterpiece of Beethoven's middle period. Its four movements unfold in different ways over dance-like rhythms. The second movement offers a solemn yet lyrical atmosphere, while the fourth movement conveys rhythmic propulsion.
Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 is the most diverse and passionate work among the seven symphonies he composed. It combines Tchaikovsky's characteristic dark and enchanting melodies with delicate orchestration, evoking intense emotions.
It is known that Tchaikovsky was conscious of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 "Fate" when composing this piece. While Beethoven's work depicts resolutely confronting fate, Tchaikovsky's expresses surrendering to destiny.
Van Zweden said, "I hope you pay close attention to the completely different and distinct styles that these two symphonies convey."
