With the recent social issue of so-called "ghost children"?those who have birth records but no birth registration?and child abuse, Seo-gu, which last year became the first in the Gwangju area to receive the upper-level UNICEF Child-Friendly City certification, has taken a proactive stance in protecting children's rights.
Mayor Kim Ikang of Seo-gu promised, upon launching "A Special Day, A Special Challenge" the day before, "We will create a Seo-gu where our children are happy and respected."
Additionally, Bae Junyeol, director of Good Neighbors, visited Seo-gu Office with students Heo Minhae, Kim Soyeon, and Kim Jihu from Gwangju Seo Elementary School and delivered a "Policy Proposal for Children" to Mayor Kim.
They emphasized, "The issue of child abuse is a crisis for children and their rights, and preventing child abuse is the most fundamental and important practice to guarantee children's rights," and requested Seo-gu to ▲ create a happy nurturing environment for children ▲ take the lead in protecting children suffering from child abuse ▲ strengthen the medical support cooperation system for child abuse victims.
Mayor Kim Ikang of Seo-gu said, "Children are the future of our Seo-gu," adding, "We will listen carefully to every voice of the children and continue to pay attention to child policies so that our children are respected as complete individuals and grow up healthy, and we will do our best efforts."
Meanwhile, the next participants nominated were Go Gyeongae, chairperson of the Seo-gu Council, and Kim Jongguk, manager of the Kia Tigers.
