Mr. A, who worked as the administrative director of a hospital in Eumseong, Chungbuk, was indicted for sexually assaulting and illegally filming two female nursing assistants in their 20s after giving them juice mixed with the narcotic drug zolpidem in January last year.
Zolpidem is a drug used for short-term treatment of insomnia, with rapid effects that are administered just before sleep. Due to the risk of drug dependence and abuse, it is designated as a psychotropic drug (narcotic) and requires a doctor's prescription.
Investigations revealed that Mr. A lured the victims under the pretext of a company dinner and gave them the orange juice in the hospital VIP room, causing them to lose consciousness.
Mr. A's crime was uncovered by the boyfriend of one of the victims who came looking for her after losing contact. The victims quit their jobs due to the shock of the incident and are receiving psychiatric treatment.
Mr. A, who secretly filmed even the victims' bodies, was also found to have illegally filmed women's body parts 12 times at the hospital since 2019.
In the first trial in March last year, the court sentenced Mr. A to three years in prison and detained him in court, stating that "the crime was meticulous, including preparing zolpidem in advance, and the nature of the crime is serious." However, the prosecution, which had sought a nine-year sentence, appealed, arguing that the sentence was too light.

In response, the appellate court stated, "He abandoned basic ethics for his own sexual satisfaction, targeted subordinate employees at his workplace, which is a serious offense, and the victims suffered great psychological shock," and maintained the original sentence, saying, "The original sentencing cannot be seen as exceeding the reasonable range of discretion."
