On the 6th, POSCO E&C announced on the 9th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for "nurturing talent and strengthening technological cooperation in the nuclear field" at Seoul National University, attended by Han Sung-hee, President of POSCO E&C, Kim Gon-ho, Director of the Nuclear Future Technology Policy Research Institute at Seoul National University, Hong Yoo-seok, Dean of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, and Park Gun-chul, Emeritus Professor of Nuclear Engineering at Seoul National University. Earlier, POSCO E&C also signed an MOU with the Korea Nuclear Industry Association last month to accelerate the promotion of nuclear projects.
Through this agreement, POSCO E&C will open 41 online courses based on construction manuals and nuclear power plant construction practices and cases, grounded in construction technical specifications by field such as architecture, machinery, electricity, and civil engineering, in cooperation with the Korea Nuclear Industry Association.
Additionally, with the "Seoul National University Nuclear Future Technology Policy Research Institute," POSCO E&C plans to develop 14 group training courses covering nuclear power plant construction, nuclear industry outlook, domestic and international nuclear policies, and SMR (Small Modular Reactor), and conduct a "practical talent development education program in the nuclear field."
Based on this, POSCO E&C intends to operate a nuclear practical workforce training course by September this year, accepting applications from employees in charge of nuclear projects, outstanding personnel involved in similar projects such as coal, combined power generation, and heavy ion accelerators, and employees wishing to grow in the nuclear field.
To expand its business in the globally re-emerging nuclear power sector, POSCO E&C established a Nuclear Business Promotion Team in June last year and is actively participating not only in nuclear power plant and SMR projects but also in nuclear utilization facility projects such as next-generation synchrotron radiation accelerators.
POSCO E&C has accumulated nuclear power generation technology since participating in the Korean SMART project, a national project, in 2010, becoming the first private company to perform BOP (Balance of Plant) design. It has proven its technological capabilities by steadily carrying out various nuclear projects requiring high precision and stability, such as the Pohang synchrotron radiation accelerator and the Daejeon heavy ion accelerator construction.
POSCO E&C, which holds essential quality certifications for nuclear projects including domestic "KEPIC design and construction certification" and overseas "ASME construction certification," is preparing to participate as a consortium member in the Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 project. Recently, it has been focusing its capabilities on technology development by participating in the government's new SMR model development and commercialization project, "i-SMR (innovative SMR)."
