Gangnam-gu Enacts Ordinance to Foster Robot Industry, First Among Basic Local Governments Nationwide
Ordinance Promulgated on the 7th... Establishing Foundation for Developing Suseo Station Area as a Robot Hub and Revitalizing Robot Business
Gangnam-gu (Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) announced on the 7th that it will promulgate and implement an ordinance concerning the fostering and support of the robot industry, becoming the first basic local government nationwide to do so.
The global robot industry market size is expected to grow from approximately 25 billion USD in 2020 to 160 billion USD by 2030, recording an average annual growth rate of 20%. The demand for industrial and service robots is rapidly increasing due to population aging, the resulting population decline, and automation of industrial processes.
To establish a foundation for fostering the robot industry, a core business of the 4th industrial revolution and a future growth engine, the district has enacted the “Seoul Special City Gangnam-gu Ordinance on Fostering and Supporting the Robot Industry,” the first among basic local governments.
Currently, ordinances for fostering the robot industry exist only in five metropolitan local governments (Busan, Incheon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, Gyeongnam), making Gangnam-gu’s ordinance the first among basic local governments nationwide.
The ordinance stipulates the mayor’s responsibilities for the continuous growth, development, and competitiveness enhancement of the robot industry. It establishes the basis for promoting robot-related fostering projects such as establishing and implementing comprehensive plans, conducting surveys, research and development, demonstration projects, and training specialized personnel.
Gangnam-gu, which is promoting the Gangnam Robot Hub District around the Suseo Station area, plans to activate fostering and support for the robot industry based on the ordinance and promote lifestyle robot industries that can practically enhance the welfare of residents.
