KT Challenges the Education Platform Market... Can It Become a 'Red Ocean' Catalyst? View original image

KT is expanding its online education platform business by launching an 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Future Education Platform.' Starting from the second semester, the platform will be initially applied to elementary, middle, and high schools under the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and then expanded nationwide, aiming to achieve annual sales of 200 billion KRW by 2025. In a situation where the edutech sector is already classified as a 'red ocean' with many companies entering, attention is focused on whether KT's service can establish itself stably in the market.

According to the industry on the 6th, KT introduced an AI education business last month as a newly focused customized AI service. It is the ‘AI Future Education Platform’ leading the digital education transformation in educational sites.

In line with policy changes for promoting future education by educational authorities, KT aims to lead digital innovation in educational sites based on its accumulated digital platform capabilities. The official service name has not been decided yet.

KT’s AI Future Education Platform helps students diagnose their learning levels through AI learning achievement analysis and supports self-directed learning with customized recommended learning content.

It analyzes the entire learning process using content meta (META) information and learning activity data applied with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines and international standards. AI machine learning technology is also applied to ensure a virtuous cycle of diagnosis, evaluation, and recommendation tailored to each student.

Additionally, it provides features such as automated lesson design, AI-recommended customized assignment creation, and automatic analysis of learning levels and status by class/student, enabling teachers to offer personalized learning guidance.

The AI Future Education Platform allows teachers and students to share content and communicate in real-time during classes through the ‘Integrated Learning Window’ function. It also offers various features such as communication and collaboration tools and class management tools.

KT considered scalability by designing an open structure that can easily accommodate various external content and edutech services, including curriculum and career/college admission consulting, to ensure the AI Future Education Platform can be well utilized in educational sites.

KT will immediately apply the AI Future Education Platform to public education sites this year. From the second semester, the platform will be applied to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and then expanded to other regional education offices. The goal is to achieve annual sales of 200 billion KRW in the future education platform sector by 2025.

However, it is still uncertain whether it can establish itself stably in the market. This is because many domestic and international services such as Naver Whale Space and Google Classroom have already secured their positions in the market.

In particular, Naver’s Whale Space shares many functional similarities with KT’s AI Future Education Platform. Whale Space is a platform that gathers various services needed for classes within the Whale browser, allowing teachers to set an optimized classroom environment for students by utilizing class management solutions, educational solutions that enhance class quality, and features that block unnecessary apps and websites. It has already been introduced in 17 city and provincial education offices nationwide, with the number of account users surpassing 1.1 million.

KT is confident that it can gain an advantage over other platforms through content partnerships. In fact, KT’s AI Future Education Platform exclusively provides 800,000 learning contents for five major subjects (Korean, English, Math, Social Studies, Science) in cooperation with EBS.

Lee Young-ho, Head of KT Online Education Business Project-TF (Senior Executive Director), said, "KT is the service provider that knows the Korean education field best," adding, "The biggest strength is that we can reflect the requirements of education offices and provide the necessary content for public education without any other tools."
